Here I want to share with you an interview of Thomas Bjelkeman-Pettersson co-founder and co-director of AKVO.org a non profit organization based in the Nederland. Akvo.org is promoting new tools that are changing the way development NGOs are working, analyzing, using and sharing data.

I want here to share my experience on using DHIS2 software using a MacBook Pro. Hope the following steps will help you enjoy DHIS2 tool with your Mac OS X 10.6.
- You need to have Java installed
To know if java is installed opening a Terminal and run
$: java -version
you should see something like this.
java version "1.6.0_33"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_33-b03-424-10M3720)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.8-b03-424, mixed mode)
You need to increase Mac OS X shared memory:
I found this useful article at this address:
How to set the JAVA_HOME variable in Mac OS X – Snow Leopard
February 26, 2010 by decoding
Recently I had to setup a Java app on my Mac, which was running from the Terminal, and needed the JAVA_HOME variable set.
Here’s what had to be done:
- Start the Terminal app.
- Create/Edit ~/.bash_profile file.
To compile PCRE on my Mac OS X, I'm using this ./configure option without --prefix and its works. PHP is enable to use the compiled PCRE when using it with --prefix=/usr . I don't know why, but this is the configure string thats works for me.
$: ./configure --docdir=/usr/share/doc/pcre-8.31 --enable-utf8 --enable-unicode-properties --enable-pcregrep-libz --enable-pcregrep-libbz2 --disable-static
After struggling I found on this forum:
The following post that helped me fixed the problem:
Turn off internet sharing.
Go into system preferences -network
Click on Airport in the left hand side, then click 'advanced' on the right hand side'
Click TCP/IP and turn 'Configure IPv4 to Off
Click OK, then click 'Apply' in the network window.
After that I am now back to normal and my network is up and running again without problems.
Forgot...after you do that turn internet sharing back on...duh.
I have MacBook Pro and have spent a lot of time setting up a working development environment for Symfony project development. I have struggled a lot especially with the intl extension and the fact that after updating the system Mac OS 10.6 will erase your custom php library.
This setting work for me, maybe it can help someone else...
1) Download PHP version php-5.4.6.tar.gz on http://php.net
2) uncompress the archive php-5.4.6.tar.gz somewhere maybe under /home/your-username/src/
It is not yet official but we have been just informed that WHO has chosen DHIS2 to become the HealthMapper 5.
This a very important step toward the standardization of HIS in the world.
You may want to learn more about WHO health information tools integration:
I'm just back from Côte d'Ivoire with Jørn Braa from HISP (see http://hisp.info) were we had a good work time with DIPE (Direction de l'Information, de la Planification et l'Évaluation) the Ivorian direction in charge of HIS. We first made a small evaluation of the existing system based on SIG Vision a MS Access based software. SIG Vision is developed by a local IT company called "Silicon wised". The software is well designed but suffers from important lacks:
- the weakness of MS Access database
- the application is not web based
- the report functionality is basic
After upgrading my Ubuntu Gutsy to the new Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 I noticed that when I tried to start my existing tomcat6 installation I get the following message:
“Neither the JAVA_HOME nor the JRE_HOME environment variable is defined
At least one of these environment variable is needed to run this program”
Even if I define the JAVA_HOME and the JRE_HOME in my .bashrc files I continue getting the same error.
